Intuition. If a vector is a list of numbers, a matrix is a grid of them — a rectangular block with rows and columns. In AI engineering, matrices are how we package many vectors at once (a batch of examples, or the weights connecting one layer to another). Yesterday's dot product was between two vectors; matrix multiplication is just a huge, organised collection of dot products done in one shot.
Mechanism. To multiply matrix A (shape m×n) by matrix B (shape n×p), the inner dimensions must match (both n). Entry (i, j) of the result C is the dot product of row i of A with column j of B. The result has shape m×p.
Why it matters. A neural network layer is literally y = Wx + b — a matrix W times an input vector x. Every forward pass through a Transformer is a stack of matrix multiplies (that's what GPUs are optimised for). Understanding shapes is the #1 debugging skill: most "dimension mismatch" errors are just a violated inner-dimension rule. Note matrix multiplication is not commutative: AB ≠ BA in general.
Worked example. A (2×3) times B (3×2) → C (2×2):
