OpenAI refreshes GPT-5.6 Sol — and makes free text chat unlimited

On 7 August OpenAI rolled out an updated GPT-5.6 Sol for paid tiers (one model handling both instant replies and deep reasoning, with a reasoning-depth slider) and made text chat unlimited for Free/Go users on the smaller GPT-5.6 Luna. Limits stay in place for uploads, images and voice — a clear push to normalize near-zero marginal cost for basic AI chat.

AMD buys Taalas, which etches AI models directly into silicon

AMD confirmed the acquisition of Toronto startup Taalas (founded 2023), whose HC1 chip hardwires one model's weights physically into silicon — trading flexibility for dramatic inference speed (demos around 17,000 tokens/s). It's the first time a major GPU vendor buys "model-in-silicon" tech, a signal that dedicated inference hardware is becoming its own battleground.

Jeff Dean's new startup has a name: Discovery Loop

The Google departure covered earlier this week is now concrete: Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals are launching Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation aiming to automate the scientific research loop itself (hypothesis → experiment → evaluation → next hypothesis). Google is a founding investor and cloud partner; funding and valuation undisclosed.

Microsoft: $24.1B of AI revenue is tied to OpenAI single source

Bloomberg, citing Microsoft disclosure documents, reports that $24.1 billion of Microsoft's AI-related revenue is tied to OpenAI — meaning OpenAI transactions make up the majority of Microsoft's AI business. The circular structure (investment flowing back as revenue) complicates reading either company's results. Single-source report so far.

  • in Anspruch nehmen — nutzen, verwenden.

Momentum & Adam — why nobody trains with plain SGD anymore

Intuition. Yesterday's SGD update follows the current mini-batch gradient — and only that. But mini-batch gradients are noisy, and loss surfaces have narrow ravines: steep walls in one direction, a gentle slope in another. Plain SGD zig-zags across the ravine walls instead of rolling down the valley floor. Momentum fixes this like a heavy ball: keep a running velocity, add a fraction of the previous step to the new one. Oscillations cancel out; the consistent downhill direction accumulates.

The mechanism. Momentum keeps an exponential moving average of gradients: v ← β·v + g, then w ← w − lr·v (β ≈ 0.9, so roughly the last ~10 gradients vote on the direction). Adam goes one step further and adapts the learning rate per parameter. It tracks two EMAs — the mean of gradients m (first moment) and of squared gradients v (second moment) — and divides one by the square root of the other:

m = β1·m + (1−β1)·g        # direction (momentum)
v = β2·v + (1−β2)·g²       # magnitude (per-weight scale)
m̂ = m/(1−β1ᵗ);  v̂ = v/(1−β2ᵗ)   # bias correction
w = w − lr · m̂ / (√v̂ + ε)

Parameters with rare, small gradients (e.g. embeddings of rare tokens) get boosted; parameters with huge, frequent gradients get damped. The bias correction matters early in training, when the EMAs are still warming up from zero.

Why it matters. Adam (2014) is the default optimizer of the deep-learning era — nearly every Transformer, including the frontier LLMs, trains with AdamW (Adam with decoupled weight decay). Its per-parameter scaling makes training robust to the wildly different gradient magnitudes across hundreds of layers, and it usually works with minimal learning-rate tuning: lr=3e-4 is a famous "just works" starting point.

# Tiny Adam in NumPy
m = v = 0; b1, b2, lr, eps = .9, .999, 3e-4, 1e-8
for t in range(1, steps+1):
    g = grad(w)
    m = b1*m + (1-b1)*g
    v = b2*v + (1-b2)*g**2
    mhat = m/(1-b1**t); vhat = v/(1-b2**t)
    w -= lr * mhat/(np.sqrt(vhat)+eps)

Rule of thumb: SGD+momentum can generalize slightly better on vision tasks; Adam/AdamW wins on Transformers and anything sparse. Next up in this phase: regularization — how to stop all this optimization power from memorizing the training set.

Sunday — Rest & Active Recovery (Mobility, Walking, Stretching)

Six training days are in the bank — today the gains actually happen. Recovery lowers systemic fatigue so Monday's push session starts strong. Keep moving, but keep it easy: nothing today should feel like training. Reminder for the coming week: add a small amount of weight or one extra rep to your big lifts (squat, deadlift, bench, overhead press, rows, pull-ups) versus last week — progressive overload is the engine of strength gain.

Pace check: you asked for ~5 kg/month — the sustainable, muscle-preserving pace is ~0.5–1 kg per week (≈2–4 kg/month) on a 500–700 kcal/day deficit. Faster than that and you lose strength and muscle, which defeats the second goal.

Morning (or anytime): 30–45 min brisk walk — outdoors or incline treadmill, easy Zone-2 pace (you can hold a conversation). That's the fat-loss work for today.

Mobility & stretching circuit — 1 relaxed round, evening or after the walk:

MovementDuration / RepsFocus
Cat–cow (quadruped)10 slow cyclesSpine mobility
World's greatest stretch5 per sideHips + thoracic rotation
Couch stretch (hip flexors)60 s per sideFront of hip (sitting antidote)
Seated hamstring stretch60 s per sidePosterior chain after Fri/Sat
Thoracic rotations (open book)8 per sideUpper back rotation
Foam roll: quads, glutes, lats~60 s each areaEase muscle soreness
Dead hang from pull-up bar2 × 30–45 sShoulders, lats, grip decompression

Nutrition tip (Sunday special): use today's free time for meal prep — pre-cook 3–4 protein-centred lunches (chicken, lean beef, fish, or lentils + skyr for snacks). Hitting your 500–700 kcal deficit and 1.6–2.2 g protein/kg is mostly decided on busy weekdays by what's already in the fridge.
