Anthropic in talks to buy Decart for about $6 billion

Bloomberg reported on 13 August that Anthropic is negotiating to acquire Israeli startup Decart AI for roughly $6 billion — what would be its largest known acquisition. Decart builds GPU-efficiency software plus real-time video/world models, and was valued near $4 billion in May 2026, making this a ~50 % premium. The rationale is inference cost: Anthropic filed a confidential S-1 in June, and gross margin is the number IPO investors will price.

Early-stage talks — not confirmed by either company, may not close

Vantage Data Centers weighs an IPO at around $100 billion

Reuters reports the Silver Lake- and DigitalBridge-backed hyperscale operator has held preliminary talks with advisers about a listing that could raise ~$10 billion at a ~$100 billion valuation, possibly as soon as next year; a sale is also on the table. Vantage has raised roughly $11 billion since late 2023 and is tied to the Wisconsin Stargate campus. It would be the clearest public-market signal yet that data centres are priced as AI infrastructure, not real estate.

Preliminary — no filing; company has not confirmed

SpaceXAI ships Grok 4.6 for long-running agents

SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) released Grok 4.6 on 12 August, targeting multi-step agents and coding. It reportedly matches GPT-5.6 Sol on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, with a faster variant at double the price. Available through the API, Cursor, Grok Build and OpenRouter — relevant mainly because agent-heavy workloads are token-hungry and price-sensitive.

Benchmark parity is vendor-stated; index placement worth checking independently

Lenovo posts a record $26.9B quarter, AI revenue up ~60 %

Lenovo reported first-quarter revenue of $26.9 billion, up 43 % year over year, with every major business group hitting a Q1 record. AI-related products and services grew roughly 60 % and now account for about 35 % of total revenue. It is evidence the AI spend cycle has reached PCs, servers and enterprise hardware rather than staying concentrated in GPUs and hyperscaler capex.

India lands a 10,000-GPU cluster: L&T wins Together AI order

Larsen & Toubro secured an AI infrastructure contract worth ₹10,000–15,000 crore (up to about $1.57 billion) to build out roughly 10,000 Nvidia B300 GPUs for Together AI at an L&T campus in Chennai — positioned as India's largest single-cluster AI installation. It matters because frontier-scale compute has so far been concentrated in a handful of markets.

Microsoft keeps shrinking in China while leaving an AI door open

Reuters reports Microsoft has closed or exited at least 15 branches and joint ventures in China in recent years, with the country down to about 1.5 % of worldwide revenue by 2024; a fuller exit was reportedly weighed in 2023. What remains is tied to Azure and AI tooling serving Chinese companies expanding abroad — a strategy of controlled exposure rather than retreat.

Cognition discusses a round at $40 billion or more

Bloomberg reports the Devin maker is in early talks with investors at a valuation of at least $40 billion — more than 50 % above its recent mark — as annualised revenue reportedly approaches $1 billion. Separately, legal-AI startup Legora is said to be raising above a $10 billion valuation, four months after ~$5.6 billion. Coding and legal work are where AI revenue is currently easiest to measure.

Early discussions — terms could change or the round may not happen

Tageslektion: Erweiterte Partizipialattribute

Zwei Formen:

  • Partizip I (aktiv, gleichzeitig): Infinitiv + -d + Adjektivendung → steigende

Merksatz: Partizip I = das Nomen tut etwas.

zunehmend (Adj./Adv., Partizip I)
immer mehr werdend. — Unternehmen setzen zunehmend auf automatisierte Verfahren.
etwas in Kauf nehmen (feste Wendung)
einen Nachteil bewusst akzeptieren. — Wer schnell abnehmen will, nimmt oft Muskelverlust in Kauf.

Gradient Descent — how a model actually learns

Phase 3 · Classical ML Concept 12 Builds on: gradients, MSE loss

Intuition. Yesterday's concept gave us a loss function: linear regression with mean squared error produces a bowl-shaped surface over the parameter space. Every point on that surface is one choice of weights, and its height is how wrong that choice is. Learning is just walking downhill on this surface. Gradient descent is the walking rule — and it is deliberately dumb: look at the slope where you stand, step in the steepest downhill direction, repeat. No map of the landscape, no memory of where you have been. That crudeness is exactly why it scales from two parameters to a trillion.

Mechanism. The gradient ∇θL is the vector of partial derivatives of the loss with respect to each parameter. It points in the direction of steepest increase, so we move against it:

θ ← θ − η · ∇_θ L(θ)

The scalar η is the learning rate, and it is the whole game. Too small and you crawl — thousands of wasted steps. Too large and you overshoot the valley floor and bounce up the far wall, with the loss oscillating or diverging to NaN. There is a hard bound: for a quadratic loss with curvature captured by the Hessian, updates diverge once η exceeds 2/λmax, where λmax is the largest eigenvalue of the Hessian. This is where the Hessian from phase 1 pays off — it tells you how steep the steepest direction curves, and therefore how big a step you are allowed to take.

Worked example. For linear regression with MSE, L(w,b) = (1/n)·Σ(ŷi − yi)², and the gradients have a clean closed form: the error, weighted by the input.

import numpy as np

X = np.array([1., 2., 3., 4.])       # feature
y = np.array([3., 5., 7., 9.])       # truth: y = 2x + 1
w, b, eta, n = 0.0, 0.0, 0.05, len(X)

for step in range(500):
    y_hat = w * X + b
    err   = y_hat - y                # residual
    dw    = (2/n) * np.dot(err, X)   # ∂L/∂w
    db    = (2/n) * err.sum()        # ∂L/∂b
    w -= eta * dw                    # the update rule
    b -= eta * db

print(round(w, 3), round(b, 3))      # ≈ 2.0  1.0

Two lines carry all the learning. Everything else in deep learning — backpropagation, Adam, LoRA fine-tuning, RLHF — is a variation on computing that gradient more cheaply or applying it more cleverly.

Why it matters. The version above is batch gradient descent: it touches every training example before taking a single step. On a dataset of billions of tokens that is unusable, which is why real training uses stochastic gradient descent — estimate the gradient from a small random mini-batch and step immediately. The estimate is noisy, but noise is affordable and even helpful, since it nudges the optimiser out of sharp, poorly-generalising minima. Practically, this is why your training curve is jagged rather than smooth, why batch size and learning rate must be tuned together, and why a loss that suddenly explodes to NaN almost always means the learning rate was too high for the local curvature. Phase 5 will pick this up with momentum, Adam and learning-rate schedules.

One-line takeaway: gradient descent turns "how wrong am I?" into "which way do I move?" — the learning rate decides whether that move converges or explodes.

Fitness Plan · Day 5/6

Friday — Lower Body Strength (Deadlift / Hip-Hinge Focus)

Your program: 6 training days/week (Mon Push · Tue Pull · Wed Legs · Thu Upper · Fri Lower · Sat Full-body/Conditioning · Sun rest). Goal: fat loss plus strength gain. Note on the 5 kg/month target: this plan is built for the sustainable, muscle-preserving pace of ~0.5–1 kg per week. Dropping faster than that costs lean mass, which lowers your maintenance calories and makes the weight easier to regain.

Warm-up (8–10 min): 5 min easy bike or rower, then 10 bodyweight hip hinges, 10 glute bridges, 10 leg swings per side, and two light ramp-up sets of the deadlift (empty bar, then ~50 % of working weight).

ExerciseSets × RepsRest
Conventional deadlift (barbell) — main lift5 × 3 (heavy, 2 reps in reserve)3 min
Romanian deadlift (dumbbells or barbell)3 × 8–10 (slow 3 s lowering)2 min
Bulgarian split squat (rear foot elevated)3 × 8–10 per leg90 s
Barbell hip thrust (bench-supported)3 × 10–12 (1 s squeeze at top)90 s
Seated or lying hamstring curl (machine)3 × 12–1560 s
Standing calf raise (machine or Smith)4 × 12–15 (2 s pause at bottom)45 s
Weighted plank or ab-wheel rollout3 × 30–40 s / 3 × 8–1045 s

Cardio finisher (12–15 min, low-impact): incline treadmill walk at 10–12 % grade, 4.5–5.5 km/h — steady state, conversational pace. Alternative: seated bike, 15 min at moderate resistance. Keep it low-impact today; your posterior chain has already done the hard work and running would compete with recovery.

Progressive overload reminder: This week's deadlift is 5×3 rather than last week's 4×5 — lower reps, so you can go heavier. Next time you hit all 15 reps cleanly with 2 reps in reserve, add 2.5–5 kg. On the accessories, add a rep before you add weight. Log every set; without a log, "progressive" is guesswork.

📄 Download: Weekly plan as PDF

Nutrition tip of the day: Front-load your protein. Most people eat 20 g at breakfast and 70 g at dinner; spreading 1.6–2.2 g/kg bodyweight across 3–4 meals of roughly 30–40 g each keeps muscle-protein synthesis elevated through the day. At 75 kg that is ~120–165 g total. Combined with a ~500–700 kcal deficit, this is what makes the difference between losing fat and losing weight.
